ADETUS, Asociation for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism on Osa
OUR MISSION
To advance sustainable tourism in the Osa Peninsula, with an approach that guarantees A- the least possible environmental impacts, B- the most social benefit, C- enforcement of laws and regulations, and, D- conservation of natural resources.
OUR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
In order to fulfill its mission, ADETUS will hold the following goals and objectives:
Least possible environmental impact
Monitor compliance of Government offices and representatives, and private businesses and individuals, regarding operation and development of tourism in the Osa Peninsula.
Promote, carry out and follow up projects to evaluate, mitigate and monitor environmental impacts associated with tourism development and operation in the Osa Peninsula, as well as participate at the decision-making level.
Prepare and publish guidelines, recommendations and general information about practices, development and operation of sustainable tourism activities.
Encourage visitation of special interest, natural history and conservation-oriented tourists, as opposed to mass tourism, as a means of maintaining the uniqueness and quality found in the Osa Peninsula.
Maximum social benefit
Actively advance, advocate and facilitate local employment and participation in the tourism industry.
Aid and support maintenance and improvement of transportation, communications and health infrastructure; as well as urban beautification, cleaning and waste management projects.
Provide members with assistance and training, as well as help further education of the general public.
Encourage and help local farmers to improve production practices and stimulate consumption of local products in the region’s tourism industry.
Promote public and private investment and projects to develop and expand sustainable tourism practices.
Seek involvement and active participation of all stakeholders, in order to create a sense of community achievement.
Enforcement of laws and regulations
Watch the enforcement of all laws and regulations regarding tourism and conservation, and inform on irregular actions.
Petition for and participate in land use, zoning and planning projects and studies.
Join instances of supervision, evaluation, conflict resolution and decision making pertaining to the mission of the Association
Promote and support reforms to existing legislation and propose new laws or regulations regarding the mission of the Association.
Back actions to improve community security in the Osa Peninsula.
Permanent conservation of ecosystems
Advance and support private and public conservation initiatives and programs.
Propose innovative, and support sound production alternatives to foster ecosystem conservation and sustainable practices, like the Osa Biological Corridor, the program of conservation incentives and the Osa Forestry Commission, among others.
Participate in environmentalist activities, forums and umbrella organizations.
Further research and public relations.
ASSOCIATES
In order to join ADETUS, any person or business, either local or foreign, should be located and/or have regular and continuous tourism-related activities in the Osa Peninsula. The Board will have 7 members, representing each of the following sectors of the community:
Hotel owners and operators.
Commerce.
Conservationists.
Forest owners.
Farmers and fishermen.
Tourist services
Development organizations.
