Letter from the Editor, Pablo Collar

Here we are, once again in the thick of the Christmas season, when the streets of Jiménez swell with travelers from all around the planet and the aroma of tamales and biscochos waft from tidy warm kitchens from Chacarita to Carate.  Seven years in the making, the first edition of El Sol De Osa, finally hits the streets at the best of possible times.  It is a gift to the people of the Osa Peninsula and a step in a new direction, an undefined and malleable direction, one that depends on you.

The ideas behind this newspaper are many and include motivations spanning the range from the stingy and egoistic to the selfless and humanitarian.  I like to write, and I am unlikely to face the disappointment of rejection slips that the publishers of the world have bevisited upon me  from time to time.  At the same time, this publication is an effort to bridge a cultural gap that we all live in varying degrees here on the Osa.  As one of the world’s premiere vacation spots, the Osa Peninsula sees the yearly arrival of thousands of people from all walks of life.  And every year a few new foreign nationals purchase property, build residences, and meld into the lifestyle that we have each in our own way chosen for ourselves here in our tropical paradise.

For all the natural beauty and environmental splendor that this region boasts, there are enormous challenges here, socio-political, cultural, economic, and environmental.  Sustainable and healthy progress depends upon many things, and perhaps the most important of these is communication.  I don’t know if El Sol De Osa can rise to the communications challenges that exist.  But it is a bold first step in that direction, and I invite the readership to pick up the challenge and to help me turn this into a useful voice of the people of the Osa.

Thank you, and I welcome your comments, criticism, and contributions.

 Your Humble Editor,

Pablo
